Jocelyn Blumenrose

I’m a data scientist with 10 years of experience in tech companies, looking for a way I can make an impact in the climate space, with a commitment of 10-15 hours/week.

My Career

I began my career at Facebook, and was one of the first fifteen employees at Stripe. At Stripe, I started the Risk Management team, eventually moved into Data, and ended my time there as part of Machine Learning Products and Transaction and Merchant Modeling. When I began at Stripe, I was proficient in SQL but couldn’t even use the command line; I left having done significant work in Python, Ruby, Scala, and Coffeescript, and was part of the on call rotation for our real time modeling infrastructure.

In my time since Stripe – other than writing science fiction and fantasy, becoming fluent in Modern Hebrew, and having two incredible kids – I've done significant work doing data analysis for political campaigns, including two post mortems for Tech for Campaigns and the subsequent work on the notebooks and cleaning scripts that subsequent analysts used to standardize the data. I've also worked with a local environmental justice non-profit, doing data analysis for the air quality sensors they run in disadvantaged communities (as defined by SB 535).

I work in the whole range of setting up data collection, identifying & creating schemas that are useful, ensuring data integrity, and using the data for analysis and modeling.

My Interests

I'm open to lots of spaces in climate. A few particular interests of mine are:

  • climate policy & electing climate-minded candidates

    • I’m open to “climate-minded candidates” being broadly defined – I’d be okay working towards that goal indirectly on a number of parallel axes as well

  • policy & actions that support knowledge about & access to a whole foods plant-based diet

  • plugging abandoned oil and gas wells

  • disincentivizing new fossil fuel infrastructure via finance

… all in a way that supports climate & environmental justice.

I have been casually electrifying my home on the side, so I’m excited about all of that, too :)

What I'm looking for

  • a 10-15 (maybe 20?) hour/week commitment in the climate space

  • a role or project where I'm able to bring my experience in data collection and analysis and deploy a broad range of my knowledge

  • a small team to work with directly – I don't want to be silo'ed by myself, or be part of a large data organization

  • I enjoy getting to know systems & datasets, and I’m very open to scoping the work, as well

What I’m not looking for

  • a full time job

  • a research project I do by myself

  • work that doesn’t get used to make an impact

My go-to languages & tools: Python, SQL, Pandas, Excel, Jupyter Notebooks, Sublime

I’ve used: Redshift, AWS, MongoDB, Google Cloud, BigQuery, Django, Scalding, Mapbox, R, Ruby, Coffeescript, Scala
